How-To: Hack TiVo Desktop to Transcode Video to Higher Resolutions

Dave Zatz has an excellent how-to showing how you can hack TiVo Desktop’s XML configuration file to optimize video output resolution for your particular device or display preference (seriously, it’s easier than it appears). By default TiVo Desktop outputs 320×240 video for portables, which is fine for video iPods, but a bummer for 480×272 resolution PSPs and 640×480 Portable Media Players and PDAs. Degree of difficulty: 6 out of 10. Just take Dave’s advice and make a backup copy of the original file, in case you somehow screw things up.
