Apple Considering Lossless Audio Format for iTunes Music Store?
Critics of online music stores often cite one key argument against the download services: the sound quality of the files they are getting. Even though the AAC files from the Apple store are encoded at a decent bitrate to maximize sound quality vs. file size, many people consider it unacceptable to pay CD prices for non-CD quality. Well, according to AppleInsider, that trend may be changing as Apple appears to be making moves towards supporting the Apple Lossless format.
Lossless formats still save space over CDs, often reducing files to half the needed space. This rumor is fueld by a recent private release of iTunes Producer 1.4 which now includes the ability to encode music into the Apple Lossless format. The tool is given to record labels to submit their content to the iTunes Music Store. The only hindrance? The Apple Lossless format does not currently have DRM copy protection, although integrating it may not be that hard of a proposition.
