Apple Said to Be Negotiating Movie Download Terms

apple video ipod irobotReuters is reporting that Apple is in negotiations with the major movie studios to offer full feature movies through iTunes (whoa, big surprise). However, they say, the only sticking point at this time is nailing down the price per movie download. Steve Jobs wants $9.99 per download whereas the studios would like something closer to $19.99. That’s all well in good, but I’m wondering if video content purchased through iTunes will be burnable to DVD like music tracks are to CD? Hmmmm. Bet you haven’t heard that before. The way I see it is… if it’s OK to burn iTunes purchased music tracks to CD, then it makes sense to extend the courtesy/convenience to movies as well – unless you’re fine with only being able to playback your purchased content on Apple labeled devices for the rest of your life.

Side note: The latest version of QuickTime Pro, according to an Online Tonight radio broadcast, offers a burn to DVD feature that works with CSS encrypted DVD movies. So, technically it might be possible to burn iTunes movies unless Apple blocks this feature from working with “FairPlay” DRM-wrapped content.
