Acer Aspire Idea 500 MCE Viiv System Combines Strong Specs with Low Profile

acer aspire idea500 mceI absolutely love when PC companies break out of their comfort zones to create a design that will truly work in the living room, and not just be a “beige box” retro-fitted for a spot under the TV (via Engadget). The company drifting out of comfort-ville? Acer, that’s who. The Aspire Idea 500 (work on the name next, guys) is a Viiv Windows Media Center PC with a pretty strong set of PC specs, but with a deliberate eye to the living room.

For the spec hungry, the Idea 500 features an Intel Core Duo T2300 CPU, 250GB of hard drive space, 1GB RAM, Dual Layer DVD Burner, 7 in 1 memory card reader, integrated 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, an RF keyboard and mouse and two mini-PCI TV tuner cards. What makes the Idea 500 special is it’s plethora of connections for your living room components. It features HDMI, DVI-I, S-Video, component output, composite output, 2 SCART connections and 7.1 channel audio delivered over S/PDIF digital out (coaxial and optical). SCART have you lost? That’s because this beauty is for our European friends who will spend €1299 on the Idea 500 which is just under $1700 stateside.
