Intel SS4000-E RAID 5 NAS Reviewed

intel ss4000e nasYou know, you can never be too cautious with backing up your data. And, as that data collection grows in size, you’re going to quickly bore of backing it up to 10 DVDs every month. This is part of the reason NAS devices are becoming so popular in the small office and high-end consumer markets. Well, add Intel to the ever growing list of companies looking to cash in on the rapidly growing market. Their SS4000-E RAID 5 NAS is a solid step in the right direction, according to the reviewers at Toms Networking.

The Intel NAS, while not the least expensive (barebones system runs $575), is still competitively priced and features 4 slots for SATA drives (you supply the drives). Capable of running RAID 0, 1, 0+1 and 5, the SS4000-E could provide up to 3 terabytes of NAS storage with current disk sizes available. The Linux-based box also features 2 gigabit Ethernet ports and 2 USB 2.0 ports for connecting additional external storage. You can run RAID 5 in a hot spare configuration, which spans the data across 3 drives, while leaving the 4th drive available as a spare if any of the other 3 fails. Pretty slick, for a small office NAS solution.

Administration, as expected, is done over a web interface. The layout is “well-organized” so inexperienced users should be able to get up and running relatively easy. Performance was good when compared with other NAS devices in this segment. For full details, check out the article at the link given. It appears that Intel has made a good first step into the NAS arena.
