Net Neutrality 101 Video on YouTube

net neutralityThere is a great video tutorial on the key issues surrounding Net Neutrality that have been coming up in the press recently. There is a lot at stake, and even more consumer confusion, around these issues and this video communicates some of the consumer impacts quite well. It’s clear the group that released the video is biased on the side of neutrality, but I think it’s a good thing to raise public awareness of the issues. There are few, if any, things that the cable operators and the ILEC’s tend to agree on and Net Neutrality is one of them. If that’s not enough to make you concerned, then watch the video and form your own opinions.

We briefly discussed these issues in our recent article related to Vonage Canada, but there are significant lobbying efforts going on in Washington D.C. and in the daily press. This will be an interesting issue to watch unfold over the next few years. It will become more significant as broadband penetration continues to rise and the services offered over the broadband networks become more bandwidth intensive. The cable companies and ILEC’s would prefer to kill this issue before this happens.

  • Good find, Andrew! The video is definitely a straightforward primer on net neutrality. I didn't realize that ISPs could potentially have so much control over services we want to access. However, I do see companies, whose services are intentionally degraded by ISPs, suing for damages. What's this world coming to? Corporate greed in the U.S. is running rampant, and this is just another example.

What's your take on privately owned tiered broadband networks? I think it falls under the topic of net neutrality as well.
