Seagate Readying a 750GB Perpendicular Barracuda Drive
Someone with a fast hand over at Dailytech noticed that Seagate accidentally released a PDF specification of their new 750GB Barracuda drives. These new drives will be available in both PATA and SATA based on the new perpendicular recording technology ranging in capacity from 200 to 750GB. The Seagate website already lists the Barracuda 7200.10 ST3750640A (PATA) and the ST3750640SA (SATA) which should ship sometime this year. This news comes on the heels of Seagate’s recent announcement of its Cheetah line up using the same technology.
There are no details on pricing or cache sizes but the PDF does state that the drives will ship with either an 8MB or 16MB buffers with drive speeds up to 7200RPM. There is little question that these drives set the high water mark for size and performance and should be a pretty exciting addition to your drive bay. This obviously puts the 1TB of storage capacity well within reach of enthusiasts and should hopefully push prices of current drives further down. Prices on 500GB drives are ranging anywhere from $285 to over $400 for the top performers.
Interestingly, many of the NAS boxes on the market are designed for the current series of 500GB drives and its not clear to me whether these new drives will work properly in some of the existing NAS’ out there. I certainly hope so. Maybe it’s because I just pumped 4×400GB drives into my new home media NAS server but for some reason these new drives get me pretty excited. I’m already through about 70% of my capacity and the thought of a 4×750GB RAID server with about 2.5TB of redundant storage for all of my media would be awesome.
