Top Global Introduces Pyramid Shaped Phoebus MB6000 Cellular Broadband Wi-Fi Router
Top Global has a pretty stylish new design in their high speed wireless router in their Phoebus MB6000. This router sports a radical new design that looks like a floating pyramid hovering over your desk. This new breed of wireless routers combines the best of wi-fi and 3G mobile communications technologies including CDMA 1x, EV-DO, EDGE, and UMTS and can be upgraded to support EV-DO Release A and HSDPA. It works by allowing a single cellular broadband connection to be shared over an 802.11x network.
Similar in design to Apple’s Airport line of wi-fi routers the Phoebus breaks the traditional mold of standard brick box routers. According to Gearlog’s writeup, this router is regularly used on the road by the music group 311 and the cast/crew of Desperate Housewives. It’s not likely that this router will become a fashion statement, but hopefully we will see some more creative designs for broadband sharing in the future. Top Global also makes a few other cellular broadband wi-fi routers but nothing that looks as slick as the MB6000.
The current market for broadband service in the home is dominated in the US by cable and dsl connections as reported earlier. But an increasing number of users are starting to go with fixed / mobile wireless connections such as those provided over the cellular networks. Already these services allow for high speed internet access for the mobile user but these solutions could quickly gain traction as a legitimate broadband connection for the home. This creates a huge opportunity for the wireless providers so long as they can figure out the pricing strategy and business models. It could be an untapped area for growth in the broadband space.
