QuaNext Flat Panel TV Running Embedded Linux on Pentium 4

quataris quanext 19

A new networked LCD TV running a modified version of SUSE Linux is in the works by Hong Kong manufacturer Quataris (via LinuxDevices.com). The QuaNext will have a 19 inch TFT-LCD display with a max resolution of 1440×990 and will run on a P4 processor with speeds up to 3.2GHz.

The device can switch between a PC and a TV using the remote control and would be ideal for the living room, bedroom or kitchen where a separate PC may not be easily accommodated. The DVD drive functions as both a standard DVD player while in TV mode as well as a fully functional optical drive in PC mode. Quataris has developed multimedia center software under Linux that is fully compatible with the machine and can manage photos, music, vides, movies using their application. All of this and the unit is listed at 3 inches deep!

A few of the specifications listed on the Quataris website are:

  • Pentium 4 (Prescott) processor clocked at 2.8, 3.0, or 3.2GHz
  • Up to 2GB DDR400 (PC3200) RAM
  • 220GB, 7200rpm hard drive
  • CD/DVD slim combo drive, slot-in
  • 19-inch TFT-LCD display
  • Built-in Intel GMA 900 graphics chipset
  • 10/100 LAN
  • IR and USB 2.0
  • PAL and NTSC (other formats on request)
  • Dimensions: 18.5 x 15.7 x 3 inches

No details are provided on expected ship data or geographic availability. I expect (hope) to see more and more and more of these devices hitting the market in the future. Quataris has a full line up of integrated PC devices including a car mini-PC and LCD’s in several other sizes, however, none of them have the good looks of the QuaNext device.
