Samsung Q1 UMPC Available for Pre-Order

samsung q1 umpc

No sooner do we tell you about the TabletKiosk eo UMPC hitting the market, does Samsung step up and make their Q1 UMPC available for pre-order as well (via GearLive). Are you hoping that this UMPC will best the $899 TabletKiosk offering in price? Well, you best keep hoping because as of now, the pre-order for the Q1 is £799.95, or about $1400 US greenbacks. Nope – that is not a mistake, at least not of the typing variety.

So, what will that $1400 get you other than ridicule and mockery from your friends? Well, the Q1 is spec’d to run a Celeron M ULV processor running at 900MHz, 512MB RAM, a 7″ 800×480 touch screen, Bluetooth, GPS and 802.11a/b/g wireless networking. It has 2 USB ports, a CompactFlash port and 10/100 Ethernet built-in as well, for when you want to be tethered down. The 40GB of storage rounds out the Q1. Oh yeah – battery life clocks in at 3.5 hours, though DVD Play will drop that to about 1 hour 40 minutes, which is funny because the specs don’t list a DVD drive. Interesting. Either way, don’t expect to watch The Lord of the Rings trilogy on this bad boy. My skepticism on where the market is for UMPCs deepens further now.

Those unlucky Brits usually end up paying more for neat gadgets, but I bet this will still be ~$1000 here in the US. Ouch…

As has been noted on many, many forums (here and else where) you can buy quite a nice laptop for $1000. They had better have quick and steep price drops or these things will be DOA.
Good luck with that MS, Intel, Samsung, etc…

    Don

P.S. Maybe I can pick one up from a online liquidator in a couple of months <$500. One can only hope… :D
