According to Ars Technica, Microsoft has gained a U.S. Patent for a TV interface technology called Multimode Interactive Television Chat that allows users to chat by either video or text while their favorite TV shows play in the background (via Gizmodo). The main purpose of this interesting little gadget is to limit access to internet connectivity through a timer / meter. It works similar to a light timer that you place on your lamps when you travel. This is a pretty nice little box that should be a little more secure and reliable for parents trying to controls their kids internet usage. Any parent who has tried to stop their child from accessing the internet probably knows that resistance is futile. This device, however, hooks directly up to the main line internet connection and controls access to the physical ethernet jacks. Key Net Neutrality Amendment Defeated

us capitol buildingA key amendment in favor of Net Neutrality proposed by the Democrat Ed Markey from Delaware was defeated today by a vote of 34 to 22 (via CNET). The amendment had pretty strong language that outright made it illegal for ISPs to create a tiered internet to guaranteed preferential treatment for a fee. There were some provisions in the telecommunications bill that passed related to the issue of Net Neutrality. Specifically, the bill gives the FCC the right to investigate and govern over any violation of neutrality. MORE »

apple intel saleApple’s recent introduction of the 17-inch MacBook Pro caught more than a few bloggers and analysts off guard with its curious pricing options. It didn’t take long after the announcement for everyone to realize that when properly configured, it was actually possible to purchase a more advanced 17-inch MacBook Pro for $100 less than a similarly equipped 15-inch. While this might seem odd at first glance, I think it actually sheds some light on Apple’s longer term pricing strategy across the entire product lineup. MORE »
