Windows Vista Delayed Until 2007 for Consumers

microsoft windows vista logoOkay. No sooner do I predict that 2006 will be a year of high-profile technology busts, does Microsoft come around and announce that Windows Vista (thank God they didn’t name it Windows 2006) will be delayed until 2007 for consumers, according to Reuters. The next-gen operating system out of Seattle has been pushed back numerous times and seen features cut in the past year, including their new file-system. So, another delay, though not atypical for the software giant, is an unwelcome one.

The delay is expected to be somewhere between 8 to 10 weeks, pushing the consumer release into January 2007. Business customers may see the OS by November, however. This delay could be felt throughout the industry, as the critical holiday season for PC manufacturer’s will likely be affected by this announcement. Microsoft shares fell slightly on the announcement, along with Intel and Dell.

The industry, as a whole, is also expressing their opinion on the matter, as conveyed in this article from BetaNews. One of the most intriguing is this quote from Michael Gartenberg at Jupiter Research:

Today, I wonder if Vista will ever ship. I don’t mean a product called Vista. That’s a near certainty that sometime in 2007 something called Vista will come out of Microsoft. But it’s certainly not going to be the product that Microsoft described years ago when it was called Longhorn. Key features have been removed and the product has still slipped several times.

We can certainly expect more fall-out in the coming weeks and months ahead as the industry reacts to yet another Vista delay.
