Windows Vista May Not Support HD-DVD at Launch
According to CE Pro, Windows Vista may not release with native support for the HD-DVD format, a surprising twist, since Microsoft is one of the primary backers of the technology, even promising an add-on drive for their Xbox 360 game console this year.
A Microsoft spokesperson says, “Vista’s architecture will recognize both HD DVD and Blu-ray DVD; however, current plans for Media Center support of either of these formats is unknown at this time. We do know that there will be a great HD DVD and Blu-ray DVD experience for Media Center either at Vista launch or soon after as either an extensible application or natively in MCE.”
It’s possible that the uncertainty is related to AACS encryption and Managed Copy. Microsoft has been a major proponent of Managed Copy, insisting that it be mandatory in the HD-DVD format from the get go. It will be interesting to see how much support HD-DVD gets in the upcoming release of Windows Vista.
