Sony Delays PS3 Launch until November 2006
Not sure how much of the credit in Sony’s PlayStation 3 delayed launch is due to Blu-ray copy protection specs getting finalized, but Sony’s President, Ken Kutaragi, stated in Tokyo: “When we initially announced our plans to launch this spring, we had expected the standardization work on all of the technologies to be completed by last August, but there were improvements that were decided on since then. We wanted to be sure to include all future technologies that are available now.”
Interestingly, though, MarketWatch speculates that the PS3 will be marketed as a “home entertainment system” because of Sony’s intentions in “carving a niche in the emerging era of high-definition DVD .” Note that the PS3 will be a multi-use device that will allow users to play video games, download audio & video content, watch high-def movies, play audio CDs, and possibly surf the Internet and stream content from networked PCs. Industry insiders estimate that the PS3 will cost about $900 to manufacture, but others, like David Walker, think that Sony’s woes are related to Blu-ray drive integration into their game consoles.
