Origami Prototypes on Display at Spring IDF 2006
As many of you in the tech industry know, Intel is hosting their Developer Forum this week in San Francisco. One of the unexpected surprise gadgets on display is the much rumored Origami handheld known to developers as an Ultra Mobile PC (video demo). According CNET News at the event, Intel and Microsoft are showcasing prototypes featuring 7-inch touchscreen displays, with x86 processors inside, running a variant of Windows XP.
The devices are said to only have 3 hours of battery life, but Intel plans on extending that to around 12 hours by the second generation with more power efficient chips. Prices on the device will come in around $1,000 and will be available from major OEMs this quarter; however, both Intel and Microsoft want to bring prices down to a more acceptable $500 range within the next year or two.
Notice: I just added myself to the roster of people attending Intel’s IDF showcase event on Thursday, March 9th (10:00am). I hope I’ll be able to bring back more pics and possibly video of what’s presented. If anyone is planning on attending and wants to meet up, drop me an email (Attn: Publisher).
