Mac mini as TiVo Killer is Not Likely

apple mac mini intel

The announcement earlier this week that the new Apple Mac mini would feature an Intel processor and FrontRow spurred the rumors that Apple is positioning the mini as a future DVR device to compete with Media Center PCs and TiVo units. Well, according to Apple Senior Vice Present of Worldwide Marketing, Philip Schiller’s statement to USA Today (and covered by AppleInsider), don’t hold your breath waiting for it to happen. Schiller made it painfully clear that “We’re not trying to replace the TiVo.” Apparently, the Mac mini is “…about taking the media from your computer and accessing it via the TV.”

My take:
I know Apple-ites will take issue with this, but Apple would not take over the living room if they decided to enter the market. It took Microsoft quite a while to get Media Center perfected, and other companies like Snapstream and MythTV still struggle to keep up. As good as Apple is at design, they are not faultless. Other than the iPod, they’re mainstream penetration is negligible. Apple’s bread is buttered with the iPod and for now, TV recording isn’t – and shouldn’t be – on Apple’s radar of things to work on.

Yeah, but will it be in the Mini format? I doubt it. It can stay in the Tivo format, but it'll have to support multiple HD tuners (OTA & Cable card) and I guess SD (for a copule more years).

Futhermore, it would need to still be a computer and not just a peice of AV gear.
