Sony PSP to get 8GB of Memory?

sony pspThe darling “more than a game player” portable device out of Sony, the PSP, is apparently due for a substantial update of 8GB of memory, according to MobileMag. Given recent reports that suggest UMD movie sales are not ideal and Sony’s desire to market the PSP as their iPod killer, an upgrade to internal memory seems logical, if not somewhat late. Originally, it was assumed that the memory would be NAND Flash from Samsung but news has cropped up recently that suggests the two companies are struggling to agree on a price. This could lead Sony down a Microdrive path.

Showing that Sony has significant pull, news of the breakdown in talks dropped the price of NAND Flash between 3 and 5.3% in one day. Deutsche Bank remarked that if Sony and Samsung can’t make friends, the world supply for NAND Flash will surpass demand by up to 10%, which would drive prices lower. The strategy of releasing a PSP with integrated memory seems to fit into recent reports that Sony wants to position the PS3, along with the PSP, as connected media devices that integrate and share content like movies and music. Given this desire, it would seem that integrated memory would be a requirement for the PSP going forward.
