HBO Wants the FCC to Occlude Their Content from DVRs

hbo logoHBO, which has been creating content worthy of recording for many years, has now decided that they don’t want you recording their content. Ever. Period. End of Story. Apparently, HBO thinks they deserve special treatment by being treated as “Subscription Video On Demand”, which in their opinion, should be broadcast-flagged as “Copy Never.” So, if you miss the season premiere of The Sopranos, you’re out of luck (of course, it will re-air 35 times during the week, but that’s beside the point).

Eric at Ars Technica speculates that the real motivation is about finding new ways to “monetize the content,” meaning “charge you multiple times for the same thing.” We’re already seeing this with other networks, to some extent, with video downloads through iTunes and the like. Is Eric off-base or is he dead-on? Give us your thoughts on the matter.

This will just force me to cancel HBO because I never watch movies (or HBO made shows) at real time. Morons!

"it will re-air 35 times during the week", that is one reason that I do not subscribe to HBO, Showtime, etc... All they do is show the same stuff all month long, once I watch the particular movie/show then the rest of the month there is nothing for me to watch on that channel. I just subscribe to Netflix for my movie needs.
