Sony Sets Blu-Ray Disc Prices

bluray logoReuters is reporting that Sony has announced the price points for Blu-Ray discs in the upcoming format war. Catalog Blu-ray disc titles will wholesale for $17.95, which is about the same as DVDs when they were introduced in 1997. However, new releases will wholesale for $23.45 which is between 15 and 20% higher than new release DVDs at the time. According to Sony, the premium is meant to accomodate sell-through and rental markets. Sony, however, is not announcing suggested list prices for Blu-ray discs at this time.

Additionally, Sony will be bundling DVDs with UMDs (Sony PSP discs) for only a slightly higher charge than consumers are currently paying for just DVDs. Come March 28th, you’ll be able to get one of these bundles for movies like “Resident Evil”, “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” and “The Terminator.” This bundling concept may also be used when Blu-ray hits the market, giving consumers a DVD copy (and possibly UMD copy) when purchasing a Blu-Ray movie. Expect more details to emerge as E3 approaches in May.
