A Guide to Understanding CableCARD

cablecard insertNate Anderson at Ars Technica has put together a very helpful look at CableCARD. If you have, or plan on purchasing, a TV with CableCARD built-in, you may just want to read over this article first. Not only does the article cover the history of how CableCARD came to be (through Congress, not through the industry), it also covers some of the existing technical hurdles and gives you a good idea as to why there is confusion over the technology. You’ll also get a glimpse into what the next few years hold, not only in CableCARD 2.0, but the DCAS standard that cable companies appear to be fond of. Overall, it’s a very good guide and should help you understand, at a basic level, what CableCARD is all about. You can then brag to your friends and family over your newfound knowledge, while they secretly mock you.
