SageTV Video Demo at CES 2006
Prepare to reconsider your personal video recording options. I just finished watching WASD.TV’s interview with Jeff Kardatzke of SageTV and I was definitely left impressed. Jeff demo’d the VWB MediaReady 5000 (the $699 unit that runs SageTV for Linux), the SageTV Media Extender, and the company’s new Beta “Place Shifting” application that gives users remote desktop and video playback from their SageTV server back at home.
Highlights:
- SageTV for Linux is now available to the general public for $79.95 – not just OEMs anymore.
- The Hauppauge MediaMVP-based SageTV Media Extender sells for $99 and works with all SageTV products – i.e. VWB MediaReady 5000, SageTV for Windows/Linux. The Media Extender also accepts the playback of custom SageTV add-ons and UI tweaks created using the company’s SageTV Studio development kit.
- SageTV’s Place Shifting app transcodes video from MPEG-2 to MPEG-4 for remote PC Internet streaming. In addition, the company has a Web browser-based version for handheld devices that gives users access to SageTV’s menu/recording functions (it sounds like there’s no video output with this setup, though). Note: price and availability have not yet been disclosed.
Thanks goes to Jason Meudt for the news tip!
