DCAS to Replace CableCARD in 2008?

And you were thinking that what’s happening in the CableCARD world was confusing enough. Now, the National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA) has plans on moving [PDF file] its hardware key for authentication and decryption from the CableCARD to the a new system called Downloadable Conditional Access System (DCAS) which uses a embedded security chip within a set-top or television that enables it to receive and apply a downloadable software security key from a cable provider.

Dave Zatz says, “Basically, they’ve developed a framework to allow the download of digital certificates.” Dave goes on to say that “DCAS would be simpler for consumers and providers to manage (any set-top box should work with any cable provider without needing to acquire a unique CableCARD).” Sounds interesting, but I’m curious if the NCTA will be willing to port DCAS to the PC platform — yet, another hurdle. Expect to see DCAS in set-top boxes by 2008.

Well, given their track record of getting ANYTHING done in that industry that amounts to change, I wouldn’t be overly afraid. I think 2038 is the more likely timing they will have introduced something new. By this time we’re probably talking direct-to-brainwave (d2bw) TV, or something like that. :p

Talking about direct-to-brainwave, have you seen the Samsung’s latest TV commercial where everyone is watching streaming video/tv through their cellphones and they just sit there oblivious to the world passing them by? I like digital media and its related technologies, but a company that promotes dysfunctional, anti-social behavior has its priorities in the wrong place, IMHO.

Yeah, I saw that ad, and thought the same thing. Seemed a bit weird to promote it that way. I may never get out all that often to socialize, but at least when I am out, I am actually a participant…
