TiVo Innovates on Targeted Advertisements

tivo character ccWhile still in the early stages of patent filing, TiVo has ingeniously setup a system where their DVR platform will be able to understand keywords in closed captioning meta data to serve up relevant ads to viewers (via Zatz Not Funny). So, maybe the next time your watching your favorite TV show, and they start name dropping products or brand names, TiVo will serve up ads related to those products in the next commercial break.

After further thought, though, I’m thinking TiVo’s latest announcement of ads being served by category of interest or keywords (if you’ve opted-in to TiVo ad search) is the way to go between the two. Who wants to be watching CSI and get an advertisement for a scalpel, DNA test, or something ridiculous thing like that? I guess we’ll have to see it in action before we can judge its true significance.
