No New Slingbox for CES 2006 (At Least Not for the U.S. Market)
On Monday, it was widely believed that Sling Media, the makers of the Slingbox, were going to unveil a new Slingbox at CES 2006 – not even a year after the release of the first Slingbox. The rumor was spurred by an announcement from Philips Semiconductor stating that a new AV Decoder was going to be used in the new Slingbox to be unveiled at CES. This concerned early adopters of the Slingbox who did not want to see their device outdated so quickly.
Luckily, Sling Media didn’t wait to respond and was happy to clarify the rumor (via I4U). Long Story Short – Sling Media will not be releasing a next generation Slingbox as originally feared – at least, not for the U.S. market. Without directly stating so, Jeremy Toeman, Vice President of Product Management for Sling Media, stated that it is “a lot more likely” that the upcoming Slingbox will be for countries that use the PAL standard.
