Slim Devices Squeezebox 3 Released

slim devices squeezebox 3Slim Devices announced today the release of their third revision of the Squeezebox. The Squeezebox is an MP3 player for the home network. It includes a free PC/Mac-side component that scans your music library and shares it out to LAN networked Squeexboxes. The PC/Mac (server-side, really) component is notable because it also provides browser-based control of your LAN’s squeezeboxs. This feature allows for remote control-like functionality via a LAN connected PDA or laptop making it akin to a “poor man’s” Sonos Digital Music System.

I had the first revision of the device a couple of years ago and can confidently state that even my technologically-challenged fiance could use it with ease. The new Mark 3 model boasts a higher quality Digital Audio Converter for higher quality sound output (although I never had any problems with my Mark 1), a better display, and 802.11g support.

The Squeezebox is particularly interesting because it is very mod friendly. Among other modifications, someone wrote a video playback mod for the device.

At $299 for the 802.11g model (there’s a wired version available for $249), it’s not a bad deal if you’re looking to add MP3, WMA, FLAC, AAC, WAV, and Ogg Vorbis playback to your entertainment center without installing an HTPC.

It's great news, we are finally getting more options in Digital Music Systems, with the Squeezebox3, the recently released Olive's Musica from Olive Media Products (www.olive.us) and the Phillips WACS 700 arriving in the US market pretty soon (www.streamium.com)... and probably there are more options still to be released...
  • I love the new silver and black design -- very modern! And the new animated VFD features add a nice touch as well.
