Mac mini Running Front Row!

apple front row mac mini setupI see that Zeno, of the MacMiniCenter Wiki, has Front Row running on a Mac mini, which just totally rocks (via TUAW)! This is the vision many of us had when the mini was released and it’s one step closer today. The implementation is still in hack mode, but it’s certainly a great indication of what lies ahead.

Well Done, Zeno!

There are some good pics on Flickr of another implementation as well….

I can’t wait to get my hands on this to play. The addition of an EyeTV or certainly DVR via Azureus would be a relatively simple way to maintain a regular flow of new video content.

  • Get a HDTV/Mac mini setup like this one running Front Row and you're in business!

  • I like it.... actually I am in the middle of planning the home theater / family room in my new house and a Mac will certainly play a part.
  • I've heard, via digg, that DVD playback is still problematic. There's also the matter of acquiring high resolution content for playback purposes. That and the lack of recording and timeshifting capability.

When you sum it all up, it still does not sound like HTPC-fodder... not just yet. However, I have full confidence in Apple that, in typical fashion, they will arrive late to the game, simplify and streamline the user experience, and ultimately release an outstanding HTPC platform.

Evan, it looks like you missed the great "Apple Lobs Grenade into Microsoft Media Center Camp" conversation we have going. Saurus would disagee with you about HDTV content on the Mac.
  • Indeed, I read it. I just believe what I believe about Front Row. It's not all there yet. An interface to EyeTV would be nice. However, what I've seen of EyeTV indicates that it can only record a single program at a time. While it's (significantly) more work, it looks like Rollup 2 for MCE allows for an MCE box to be tricked out to supporting 2 NTSC and 2 ATSC tuners. That's a helluva one-two-three-four punch!

Even so, I love what I've seen of Front Row. Apple's knack for keeping it simple resonates with me as I imagine that it would resonate with other iPod owners.
