Dell Shipping OS-Free Dimension Desktop PC
You read right. Dell is keeping their poker cards on the table and not letting their partners know what they’re up to with the release of an OS-free version of their Dimension PC line, which by the way is called the n-Series – I’m guessing the “n” stands for none, as in no OS. The Dimension E510n is available immediately in the United States and is designed to be loaded with your operating system of choice (cough, Debian GNU/Linux – Ubuntu) or with its gratis MS-DOS compatible, FreeDOS operating system. The base $849 E510n system comes equipped with a 3Ghz Pentium 4 processor, 512 MB DDR2 memory, 128 MB ATI® RADEON X300SE HyperMemory video card, 80 GB SATA hard drive, 17-inch CRT monitor, and 1-year limited warranty.
My question is, why doesn’t Dell and the other PC OEMs offer OS-free boxes as a standard option?
