Macpower DMG8 Digital Media Gateway

macpower dmg8 digital media gatewayIt’s official… Macpower definitely needs to hire a new marketing guy, or at the very least a copy editor, to explain what their new Digital Media Gateway is supposed to be and do. Here’s how the company explains it: “The DMG8 is a new Digital Media Gateway, which provides an appliance-like link between PC’s, TVs and stereos. It was created specifically to complement your Entertainment center.”

At first glance, one would consider the DMG8 to be a media adapter of sorts, but then you look over the specs and realize it’s a thin-client Linux PC impersonating a Mac mini. Being the case, the DMG8 should include Samba support for cross-platform (Apple, Windows, Linux) streaming or transferring digital media content from networked PCs, double as a NAS device when equipped with a hard drive, and bunch of other PC related uses. The only thing I’m wondering about is what kind of TV UI does the product offer? (No screenshots or price sheets were available.)

Technical Specifications:
Embedded Linux operating system
Supports a 3.5″ Hard Drive
Onboard Wired LAN connection
Wi-Fi / Bluetooth support
High Definition 1080i/720p Large Video Playback
SPDIP Dolby 5.1 Audio support
All major Video & Audio formats including WMV9 & DivX support

I own a another media product from this company which is a 3.5" HD based movie player. Looks like they have added streaming media support to this one?

Stand Alone Player with he bonus of being able to access and play content from other PC's on your network. Or at least I think that is what they are trying to say.

I am also looking forward to learning more. Has anyone seen anything else like this on the market?

Let's hope they change the design!

Although this sounds promising... i(the formfactor is nice.) I am wondering if it will be all that. If i look at the graphics on their site, I am afraid the interface will not be as beautifull as the mac media center project for instance..
