Dave Zatz: DVD to MPEG-2 to TiVo

dave zatz tivo dvd how-toDave Zatz has posted an excellent, straight-forward 6 step tutorial on how to use DVD Shrink to rip your DVD movies into a single MPEG-2 file for playback and storage on your TiVo Series 2 DVR. We previously posted related info from TiVo Support, but Dave does a better job for the less technically inclined. Bottom line: You need to rip your movies into one large .vob file, change the extension to .mpg, and then copy ‘n paste the file into your My Tivo Recordings directory in TiVo Desktop. Dave also has a helpful FAQ section on TiVoToGo and TiVo Desktop that you folks might want to look over.

I know this post post is well over 3 years old when I reply, but for those using Google and stumbling upon it...

TiVo Series 2 software does not always recognize VOBs that are simply renamed to MPEGs (because VOBs can contain several audio streams and captions - make sure that when you rip, you select *one* stream and remove captions)... but a nice little (free) tool called VOB2MPEG does the trick nicely. Or spend a couple bucks and get a copy of VideoRedo - which can remux files into actual .TiVo format.

Can someone confirm that this wont work on a Standalone, Series 2 tivo? Any workaround?
