Samsung to Offer a Dual-Format HD-DVD/Blu-Ray Player

blu-ray hd-dvd logoReuters reports that Samsung’s head of consumer electronics, Choi Gee-sung, has told the Financial Times Deutschland that Samsung will introduce a dual-format HD-DVD/Blu-Ray player if a unified standard never materializes. I predicted this move from a neutral vendor when word of a unified standard failed last month, so I’m happy to read that Samsung is stepping to the plate. However, Peter over at Engadget wonders how manufacturers who are firmly committed to one format or the other will handle the news: “Why would you buy a Toshiba HD-DVD player or a Sony Blu-ray player when you could just get a Samsung combo player that can play both?”
