Dell Open to Selling Mac OS Computers
FORTUNE today reports that Michael Dell has publicly expressed his desire to sell Dell branded Mac OS computers as an alternative to Microsoft Windows. In an email to FORTUNE writer, David Kirkpatrick, Dell writes: “If Apple decides to open the Mac OS to others, we would be happy to offer it to our customers.” Interesting…. I think its doable for a big-name OEM like Dell to convince Steve Jobs to port his software, but I can’t see smaller mom-and-pop OEMs getting a chunk of the business.
The article also had a nice nugget of information regarding Apple’s move to Intel and not AMD. Kirkpatrick found, while speaking with Henri Richard, AMD’s chief sales and marketing officer, that it was most likely due to marketing dollars. Richard told Kirkpatrick: “Porting the Mac OS to Intel and bringing along all the applications will be ‘incredibly’ expensive… and the amount [of money] Apple can get from Intel is vastly greater than what it could get from us.” But Richard went on to say: “Steve [Jobs] is a smart guy. He’ll get as much money as he can from Intel, and then go to the best architecture.”
