PalmSource Confirms Migration to Linux

palmsource logoAh… validation. I’ve heard rumors that Palm was going to be ported over to Linux to better position itself against Windows Mobile and other handheld OSs. Now, Forbes is reporting: McVeigh [Patrick McVeigh, chief executive of PalmSource] told the AP that among the changes planned is a move to an open source operating system for the handhelds. “I can tell you several major players have already contacted me and what they tell me is this: They want an open alternative – no closed, proprietary systems,” the AP quoted McVeigh as declaring at a PalmSource conference in San Jose, Calif. “That’s where we’re going. We’ve already talked about the possibility of moving over to Linux.”

But I’m a little confused, what’s going to happen once the Palm name (FYI – PalmSource on Tuesday sold its stake in the Palm trademark to PalmOne) transfers over to PalmOne (the hardware guys)? Is the PalmSource developed OS still going to be called Palm OS X.X or will it have a new name and have the ability to run legacy Palm apps? If anyone has any clues, please share. In any case, CNET asks, “Is Linux Palm’s savior?” – interesting read.
