Sneak Peek: Archos AV402 & AV700 Portable Video Players

Not sure how accurate these pictures are of the upcoming AV402 and AV700, but they both look pretty sweet. According to Gizmodo, who gathered their info from GenerationMP3, “The Archos AV402 is a case update to the AV400 series…. The AV700 is Archos’s first move into the large-format PVP space, with a 7-inch screen and a 60GB hard drive. Archos will be adding satellite and DVB tuners in a future model that will ship later in the year.”
While I’m not a fan of the larger 7-inch format PVP devices, I do like the direction Archos is taking with the AV402: slim, silver, and (hopefully) lightweight. I always thought the AV400 was a bit a brick, but it’s nice to see the new Archos PVPs taking design cues from today’s popular digital cameras. No firm release dates or prices are available at this time.
UPDATE: I4U noted that the French website, NetEconomie, is reporting “that Archos entered a partnership with EchoStar, which runs the DishNetwork Satellite TV network. EchoStar is supposed to market an adapted version of the AV400 (AV402) and AV700 to DishNetwork customers. This would enable DishNetwork customers to transfer recorded TV broadcasts or movies onto the portable AV700 and watch them on the go. I guess some DRM is in play here. The AV700 or AV702 should already come in April.” Interesting… I guess we have to wait and see how this all plays out.
