Peter Near gives us the goods in his comparison overview of Windows Media Connect versus Windows Media Extender technology. As Peter states, many consumers are confused about what the technologies can do or if they are one in the same, luckily Peter does an excellent job of demystifying the two.

Article take away:
Windows Media Connect (WMC) is a read-only playback platform. In other words, WMC devices can only playback audio, photo, and video files from an Windows XP Home, MCE, Pro, Tablet PC and is only limited by the manufacture as to what files types the device can support. However, Peter warns that each manufacture will provide a custom user-interface, which could potentially lead to unsatisfying and complex user experience.

Windows Media Center Extender (MCX) is a two-way extension of the full Media Center experience. Not only can users playback audio, photo, and video files, but multiple WMX users can interact directly with the PC to access more rich media experiences such as watching Live TV, browsing the TV guide, setting up recordings, downloading a movie via Online Spotlight. Unfortunately, though, MCX is limited to they types of formats that can be played. The only good thing about that is, that no matter which manufacture you buy a MCX device from, file compatibility will always be the same.
