Sony Monster VAIO Type X Brought to Life

sony type x

Notice to all TV junkies: Sony Japan, on November 20th will be releasing the narcotic you’ve been looking for. Early in the year Sony had been showing off a reference design for a monster-sized 1.6 terrabyte, 7 TV Tuner video server PC called the VAIO Type X at trade shows, but most people (myself included) thought, nah it’s a great concept but it will never come out, plus it would be too expensive. Guess we were wrong! Sony is confident enough that a market for their super high-end media PC exists to launch two VAIO Type X PC models (VGX-X90P & VGX-X90PS – bundled with an HDTV tuner), an accompanying HDTV tuner, and a complimentary designed flat panel 23-inch television.

VAIO Type X Feature Highlights:

  • 3.6GHz Intel CPU with Hyper-Threading
  • 1GB of memory
  • 4 x 250GB RAID 0 configured hard drives
  • 128MB PCI Express ATI RADEON X600 XT Graphics Card
  • Custom hardware based TV Tuners (looks like you can purchase tuner cards separately to meet your needs – 7 max.)
  • Sony DVD Super Multidrive with Dual Layer burning capability

So how much can you expect to pay for a Type X? Expect to pay $4,000+ for a fully configured model without a display. While it’s not chump change, it’s actually a good value for what your getting, especially if you’re a home theater aficionado who has to have it all.
