A new home networking standard has been approved by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) for enhanced audio and video streaming. 802.1q promises to prioritize data for higher-quality throughput by integrating quality of service (QoS) features: best effort, priority routing, and fully managed connections. “This standard sets the stage for consumer home networks that can play entertainment streams better, especially down the road as we start connecting different network types together and a movie or song could be coming from outside the home network,” said Virginia Williams, director of engineering for CEA. “By giving manufacturers a new way to code their entertainment streams on Ethernet, CEA-2007 will enable home networks to better differentiate between content types and play them at the same high quality level as the sources are putting them out.”
